GIS

In 2008 Ascent began working with The Mosquito Range Heritage Initiative (MRHI) of Alma, Colorado.  As a nonprofit organization, MRHI shares resources and data directly with the GIS Department of Park County and with a wide array of stakeholder agencies and organizations including the South Park Ranger District of Pike National Forest and the Colorado Mountain Club.  MRHI's 145 square mile Planning Area along the Mosquito Range encompasses six major drainage basins forming the headwaters of the Middle Fork of the South Platte River.  This mountainous area is rich in historical mining heritage and serves as an outdoor recreational destination boasting four of Colorado's fifty-four peaks having elevations exceeding 14,000'.

With stated goals of natural resource conservation, historical and cultural preservation, and the promotion of community and recreational development, MRHI's Strategic Plan includes the utilization of a Geodatabase for various data analyses and cartographic presentation functions.  Ascent works with MRHI to facilitate the field collection of digital photography and mapping-grade GPS data as well as to integrate the data into a GIS and to produce graphics products.  The 2008 mapping season saw Ascent's completion of an inventory of roads, trails, and alpine routes integrating linear and point data.  This accomplishment serves as the GIS platform upon which MRHI is able to ensure the continuation of the program with new mapping goals and increased potential for funding.

Ascent welcomes further opportunities combining digital mapping services with such outdoor pursuits as mountaineering, hiking, and navigation in adverse terrain.
